It is uncertain why the dates on her marker don't agree with the ones cited in books on the Field family. Her "Transcript of Death" cites a death date of 15 August 1901 and confirms her parents as Edward and Clara L. Field. The information from this transcript was taken from a book handwritten from an older book; errors in spelling were transcribed from the original version. The volunteer photographer noted that her marker is in the old section and yet the marker itself appears to be newer than those in the old section. It may be that her marker was indeed added later and the person ordering it wasn't quite sure of the dates. Or perhaps her original marker was damaged when the log church building burned in 1928 and when a replacement marker was ordered, the dates on the original marker were not quite legible.

She went by her middle name of Stephanie. It is believed she was in northern New York state visiting with her mother, who was in the area to see her wealthy and artistic friends at their camps in the Adirondacks. Stephanie contracted either scarlet fever (Field family book) or diptheria (death record) and died there. Thus her family may not have been able to transport her body back, due to transmission concerns, to either New York City, Westchester County, New York or even to the Stockbridge, Massachusetts cemetery, where her family had a plot. This may explain why she was buried in Paul Smiths, New York.
