John Wheaton(1818-1897) was born in Steelmanville, Atlantic County, New Jersey, the son of Joseph Wheaton and Margaret (Null) Wheaton of Little Egg Township. Around 1850 John moved to New York City, first as a butter merchant, then a wholesale grocer.
In 1856 he married Laura Watson Atwood (1833-1858), the niece of his landlady, Anna B. Watson. They had one child, James Watson Wheaton (1857-1942).
In 1860 he married Mary Antoinette Blackinton (1836-1910), of North Attleboro, Mass. They had several children, of whom only four survived into adulthood.
