RALEIGH -- Mae AndersonWard 89, of Raleigh, died Tuesday.

Mrs. Ward was born on December 11, 1918 in Williamston, to the late Julian Carr and Josephine Robertson Anderson.

Loving much is what Mae's life was about: as a daughter, as a sister, as a wife, as a mother, as a grandmother, as a friend-her life revolved around caring relationships with others. She modeled for her daughters and grandchildren how to be both a gentle caregiver and a vivacious companion. Her lively personality and merry wit shone through her bright smile and her sparkling eyes; she was quick to enjoy a joke and eager to hear and to tell family stories, Mae's belief that faith should be put into works was reflected in her active service throughout her life: in her participation as both a member and office in WMU groups and Sunday School classes, as a GA leader, as a room mom, and as a member of the Edenton and Rocky Mount Woman's Clubs.

Maewas preceded in death by her husbands, Jack Owen Riley in 1944 and Ernest Ward in 1997 and her two sisters, Josephine Vorholzer and Isabel Harrington.

Funeral service will be held 1:00 p.m. Friday, December 5, 2008 at Greystone Baptist Church. Interment will follow in Historic Oakwood Cemetery.

The family will receive friends Thursday, 6:00-8:30 p.m. at BrownWynne Funeral Home St. Mary's Street.
