She was brought up and educated in Hosmer, graduating with the HHS Class of 1941. Amy married Wilmer Heckenlaible at Selby, South Dakota, on June 9, 1941. While Wilmer served in the Army during WW II, Amy lived in Hosmer. Upon Wilmer's return, the couple remained living in Hosmer, and he resumed his teaching career.
Amy worked as a clerk at the Red and White Grocery Store and the Super-Valu Store, both in Hosmer. She later assumed the business manager job at the Hosmer School, a vocation she held for many years. Before retiring, she held a county seasonal job helping poeople apply for fuel assistance. For the past three years, she had been in nursing home care.
Amy was an active member of St. John's Church, where she sang in the choir, was involved in the ladies' group, and taught Sunday School and confirmation classes. She also belonged to the Hosmer Legion Auxiliary and was active in the Hosmer Civic Club. Amy always kept a big garden and will be remembered as a good cook.
Amy is survived by her daughter, three grandchildren, and six great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her father on March 29, 1935, her mother on March 7, 1962, her husband on March 10, 2003, her son Douglas on June 22, 1996, one brother, and nine sisters.
