The son of James & Mary (Reese) Adams, in 1860 he was a druggist's clerk and tobacconist living in York Borough, York County, Pennsylvania. He stood 5'2" tall and had dark hair and hazel eyes.


A Civil War veteran, he served three terms of service:

  1. Enlisted at an unrecorded age in York September 12, 1862, mustered into state service there as a sergeant with Gibson's Independent Company of Militia, and honorably discharged with the company September 24, 1862.
  2. Enlisted at an unknown age in York June 17, 1863, and mustered into state service at Harrisburg June 29 as 2nd lieutenant of Co. B, 1st Pennsylvania (Ramsey's) Militia Battalion. He was detached to the provost at Chambersburg August 31 and honorably discharged with his company October 3, 1863.
  3. Enlisted at the stated age of twenty-seven in Harrisburg January 27, 1864, mustered into federal service that day as a 2nd lieutenant with Co. B, 187th Pennsylvania Infantry. Promoted to 1st lieutenant effective March 18, 1864, and to captain to date May 1, 1865, he honorably discharged with his company August 3, 1865.


He married Caroline Howell Jessop November 19, 1890, but they had no children. Reportedly a charter member of York's Sedgwick Post No. 37, G.A.R., by 1890 he was living in Muddy Creek Forks, York County, but died at his East Market Street home in York reportedly from pneumonia and pleurisy.
