Much of what we know of Nathaniel is from a Biographical sketch of his grandson Charles Offutt of Scott Co. KY. Abstracted here from Bourbon, Harrison, Nicholas & Scott Counties Kentucky History, Biographical Sketches page 484:
"...CL Offutt, the father of our subject was born in Harrison Co. this state in 1830; son of N E Offutt and Rebecca Sutfin; the former born in MD Nov 9 1803, son of Archibald and Jane Offutt both of MD...
To Nathaniel and wife were born 10 children (Only 5 surviving to adulthood) Richard H, William, C L (Charles Lemuel), Albert M and Lou Ann.
Death:
NE Offutt is written in, then crossed out, on the 1880 Fed Census. However he is found on the 1880 Federal Mortality Schedule:
"N E Offut married, born 1803, MD died May 1880. Resident of county 60 years."

Although the 1850 Fed Census gives his children's birth places as MD, Census records show that they were BORN in HARRISON Co. KY, as Nathaniel is FOUND THERE on the 1830 Fed Census.
