Although he lived in St. Paul, Minnesota as a child, George Kernan was born on August 31, 1884 in Maryville, Missouri the eleventh of twelve children born to Owen Francis Kiernan (1836-1901) and Harriet Dunton (1836-1927). When George was about seven years old, he and his parents moved to Portland, Oregon.

On June 1, 1903, George married Maudena Elizabeth Stearns (1885-1936), the daughter of Theodore Frelinghuysen Stearns (1844-1930) and Anna Eliza Backer (1854-1919). George and Maudena had tweleve children: Curtis, Ernest, Delmar, Owen, Florence, Walter, Vernon, Francis, Earl, Lloyd, an unnamed boy who died young, and Gloria.

As a young man, George worked as a grocery deliveryman, before becoming a truck driver for a furniture company in Portland. By the 1930, he was working in a paper mill, and during the Depression he was a furniture mover. Following the Depression, George became a pipefitter in the shipbuilding industry, a career he held until his retirement.

After Maudena's death in 1936, George spent the later part of his life living with some of his children and their families, though mostly with his youngest daughter, Gloria. George passed away on October 20, 1960 in Portland. His funeral was held at Zeller Chapel of Roses. Like his wife, George was buried in Mount Calvary Cemetery, and currently does not have a headstone.
