Zebulon Jennings, Jr. was probably born on Nov. 12, 1735 in Piscataway, Middlesex County, New Jersey (sources differ), to Zebulon Jennings, Sr. (1709-1777) and Sarah Jennings (1711-1770). Zebulon, then 25 years old, married Joanna Little/Littell/Lyttle on June 20, 1762 in Westfield, New Jersey and a year later Sarah, the first of their six children was born. He died on October 12, 1776 at the age of 40, about 19 months after the birth of Jacob his last child. After the death of Zebulon, and sometime after 1779, Joanna married Ephraim Woodruff, and the family removed to present day Georges Township, Fayette County, Pennsylvania probably sometime between 1785 and 1787.

Zebulon is believed by many of his descendants to have served as a private during the Revolutionary War with the 1st Regiment, Minute Men, Suffolk County, New York Militia under the command of Colonel Josiah Smith. He is also thought by some to have fought in the Battle of Long Island on August 27, 1776 and to have died of wounds received during that battle. Unfortunately, owing to a lack of official records to support any military service, Zebulon's service to his country remains unsubstantiated and therefore does not meet the proof of service requirements set forth by the Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR ). DAR contends that Zebulon has been confused with a distant cousin also named Zebulon Jennings (John-4, William-3, John-2, John-1) of Southampton, New York, who served as a private during the Revolutionary War under the command of Colonel Josiah Smith, 1st Regiment Minutemen, Suffolk County, New York Militia.
