Eleanor was the daughter of Charles Shay and Anna Ewanska. Her true birth date is not known; no birth record has been found to confirm the date. She claimed a birth date of 03 May 1898 in her application to marry Louis Doniger in 1926 and on an April 1929 ship manifest, the earliest record of her traveling with Louis. In other travel manifests in 1929 and 1930, the records show dates of 03 May 1899, 03 March 1900, and 03 May 1905 (impossible because she is listed in the 1900 U.S. Census). The 1900 Census shows a birth of April 1898, which is very close to her claimed date in 1926, so the 03 May 1898 date is used in this family history.

Her death certificate shows two dates of death, 03 June and 04 June 1942. A reading of the newspaper articles about her death all suggest she died on the 3rd because the earliest articles were published on the 4th.

Eleanor had a sister, Myrtle, born 13 October 1899 in Chicago who died, unmarried, on 27 September 1925, also in Chicago.

Eleanor's father, Charles Shay, was born in Chicago, IL, on 12 March 1871 and died there on 13 June 1927. Anna was born in Germany on or about 20 April 1874 and died in Chicago on 13 December 1942. After her husband, Charles, died, Anna married Leopold van den Broeck on 24 October 1935 in Chicago.

Lewis (Louis Arthur Doniger) Donaldson was Eleanor's second husband; her first was Carl Richard "Dick" Moore, and they were divorced.
