Johann Nicolaus Haupt was a son of Johann Nicolaus Haupt and Anna Elisabeth Geiß of Windesheim, Palatinate [Germany].

He arrived in Philadelphia on the ship Edinburgh, where he signed the declaration of oath on 30 September 1754, together with his cousin, Johann Samuel Haupt, and his younger brother, Johannes Haupt.

He made a return trip to Germany, where he married his second wife, before settling in Pennsylvania permanently.

He was known as "Nickel" in Germany and "Nicholas" in America.

He married
(1) Maria Magdalena Caesar on 14 June 1746 in Merxheim, Palatinate [Germany] and
(2) Anna Schweiss on 28 November 1747 in Badenheim, Hessen [Germany].

Father of eleven children.

His sister Catharine (Maria Catharina Haupt) and brother John (Johannes Haupt) also emigrated from Windesheim to Pennsylvania.
