James was born 29 May 1784 to John & Catherine aka Rachael, nee Davis in Cumberland, Pennsylvania. He married Hester Robinson 24 Jun 1809. Seven children were born to this union. Listed in birth order: George, b 3 Mar 1810; John, b 18 Jun 1811; William, b 8 Nov 1812; Catherine, b 19 Sep 1814; Hannah, b 23 Jun 1816; James, b 15 Jan 1818; and Thomas, b 2 Sep 1821. James continued his father's tan yard business after his death.
James oldest son, George remained in Hardy County until after the Civil War. Family Legend has it that during the War, George was so sure that the Confederacy would win, he converted more than $10,000 to Confederacy Script which he lost. He was so disappointed in the outcome of the war he sold his possessions and moved his family to Cedar County, Missouri about 1870.
George married first, Jane Martha Burch, 4 Feb 1845 (b 19 May 1827, d 4 Jul 1859) seven children were born to this union. He married second, Christina Evans, 4 July 1860 (b 24 Oct 1827, d 27 Jun 1899), four children were born to this
union.
James' sons John and William moved to Fayette County, Kentucky the fall of 1838 where they purchased land and became prominent citizens of the region. John married Margaret Devers Haines (Haynes), 19 Oct 1824 in Kentucky. Ten children were born to this union.
James' son William never married
James' daughters, Catherine and Hannah, unmarried, remained at home in Hardy County.
James' son James continued the tan yard business in Hardy County after his father's death.
James' son Thomas remained in hardy County. He married Rebecca Ann Thorp/Thorpe, date unknown. No children were born to this union. Thomas died in the Civil War after 1863. Thomas was a private in Company B, Eleventh Virginia Cavalry(Laurel Brigade),Army of Northern Virginia.
