S/O Absalom & Margaret Hillegarde (Hautengshu) Ames. He married Martha E (or A) Davis on 27 Feb 1851 in Morgan Co., Ohio and they had their two oldest children, Samuel D & Absalom, there before moving to Vernon County, Wisconsin in 1855. Eight more children were born in Wisconsin. Joseph was always listed as a farmer in the census records. He was a Civil War Veteran.

The ten children, listed in birth order, are: Samuel D, Absalom, Erastus Hoskin, Emily Jane, Marcus de LaFayette, Margaret Ann, Dorsey Pentecost, Mary Saccharisa, Ammon N, and Rachel Harriet.
