Ephraim served in Company H. 53rd Indiana Infantry in the Civil War. He appears on the rolls as Ephraim E. and Ephraim A. in the National Park Service Civil War Index.

He was drafted and was mustered into Company H. 53rd Indiana Infantry at Jeffersonville, IN. on Sep 26, 1864.
He took part in Sherman's "March to the Sea" and North through the Carolinas to Washington, D.C. He was discharged at Louisville, KY on July 21, 1865.

Ephraim married Theressa Hancock in Indiana. In 1868 when his son William was born they were living in Leavenworth, IN. In the 1870 census of Jennings Twp., Crawford Co., IN he is shown as a 37 year old farmer born in VA. with his wife Theressa age 33, born in IN. and children William S. age 6 and Marietta 2, both born in IN.

He received an Army Invalid Pension for his service in the Civil War.

He was admitted to the National Home for Disabled Volunteer Soldiers at Danville, IL., on April 18, 1917 and died in the hospital there on Nov 24, 1917 of acute cardiac dilation. At the time he was admitted he was described as 82 years old. born in Shenandoah, VA., 5' 10" tall, with fair complexion, hazel eyes and gray hair. He was a farmer and a Protestant residing with his son William S. Biller at 410 Clay St., Paris, IL. He had been admitted for Senility, arterial sclerosis and cardiac degeneration.
