Carmel Jean "CJ" Peters (aka: Candy May), 57, former owner of Moonstone Beads of Surfside Beach, SC passed away August 06, 2014 at her home, surrounded by loved ones, after a long bout with cancer.
Mrs. Peters, born in Washington, DC, was the daughter of the late Paul May Jr. and Anne C. May Noland. She grew up in Chevy Chase, MD, graduating from Bethesda-Chevy Chase HS and Frederick Community College, where she studied American Sign Language, Photography and Graphic Arts. While also home-schooling her daughter at that time, they took an educational tour, visiting Hawaii, Australia and New Zealand.
During CJ's many years as a Behavior Modification Therapist for the autistic and as an interpreter for the deaf she also volunteered at Maryland Ensemble Theatre, Frederick, MD, working in front of and behind the curtains. With the opening of Moonstone Beads in 2004, which over the years has been a haven for "bead therapy" and where no one is a stranger, many lives have been enriched by her "what would CJ do?" philosophy.
Most of her adult life she has been a volunteer, locally at Forestbrook Middle School and with her husband, as foster parents and also host family for foreign exchange students. Some previous beneficiaries of her time and talents include Iguana Rescue/Adoption, Catoctin Zoo, Appalachian Regional Co-op and the American Red Cross.
CJ Peters is survived by her husband of 36 years, Stephen Alan Peters; daughter Dr. Ryan Peters of Ferndale, WA; sisters Kitty Allen (Keith) of DeLand, FL and Jill Vaughn of Fayetteville, AR; brother Patrick May of Frederick, MD and six other siblings. The family would like to thank the staff of Amedisys Hospice for their loving care during her illness.
In the spirit of her giving heart and belief in recycling, CJ has donated her body to University of SC School of Medicine Gift of Body and Polymer Preservation Programs.
Memorials may be sent in her name to any of the following organizations: Sea Haven for Youth, www.seahaveninc.com; Fostering Hope, Inc. www.fosteringhopeinc.com; Boys & Girls Club of the Grand Strand, (843)712-1977 or USC Educational Foundation, c/o USC School of Medicine, Cell Biology, Attn: Anatomical Programs, Columbia, SC 29208.
