Johann Jacob Haupt, son of Anna Margaretha (née Ulrich) and Johann Nicholas Haupt, was born 11 February 1792 in Middletown, Frederick County, Maryland, and christened on 1 April 1792 in Zion Lutheran, Middletown. He was the grandson of immigrant Johann Nicholas Haupt, who had arrived 1754 in Philadelphia (onboard the Edinburgh).

Jacob Haupt and Elizabeth Keller were married on 23 March 1816 in Frederick County, Maryland. The couple farmed in Frederick, and later in Washington County, Maryland, and are known to have been the parents of seven children. Having lived to age 95, he was survived by only three of his children.

"Jacob Houpt of Washington /
County Maryland […]
My Admrs [administrators] shall have put up the same kind of tomb /
Stones like my beloved wifes and after my debts and funeral expenses are paid I /
devise and bequeath to my daughter in law Susan Houpt the sum of One hun- /
dred dollars and to my son David Houpt the eight day clock and one hundred /
dollars and to my son John P. Houpt one Secretary, one table, one Split Bottom Rocking /
chair and the family Bible and the reside of my furniture to my daughter-in /
law Susan Houpt. And lastly I will and bequeath the residue of my estate per- /
and mixed that shall be required for the payment of my just debts, /
funeral expenses &c to my children and grand children as follows to wit: to David /
Houpt one fourth to William Houpt one fourth John P. Houpt one fourth and to my niece Mrs Malinda Zittle /
one eighth and to my nephew David H. Spielman one eighth, to have to hold /
the same forever. I also do nominate and appoint Eli Wade and John P. Houpt

The terms "niece" and "nephew" are used in the will in the archaic and now-obsolete sense of a grandchild.
That daughter-in-law Sarah Haupt is a beneficiary, not son William Haupt, who was her husband and then living, suggests he was disabled.
