John A. Gage enlisted as a Private in Co. D, 8th Regiment, Texas Cavalry, September 1861 in Bastrop County, Texas. This union was known as Terry's Rangers. Pvt. Gage served under the command of Capt. Stephen C. Ferrell.
Pvt. John Austin Gage was mortally wounded during the Battle of Aiken on February 12th 1865. He was laid to rest in The City Cemetery in Augusta, Georgia alongside his brethren-in-arms in the Confederate Soldier's section.

soldiers. Nearby rest the remains of a
handful of Union soldiers.
