Margaret ‘Peg’ Rodgers Boone Shanklin

ORGAN CAVE — Margaret “Peg” Rodgers Boone Shanklin , 98, of Organ Cave, WV, was born November 11, 1912, and died January 14, 2011, peacefully at her home with family members present.

Margaret was the daughter of Martyn and Sudie Appling Rodgers, daughter-in-law of Shedlia and George Boone. She graduated from Union High School in Monroe County in 1932, attended Greenbrier College for Women in Lewisburg, Marshall University, Huntington, and graduated from Concord University, Athens, with a B.S. Degree in Education. Margaret taught in the Greenbrier County school system for a number of years. Teaching was a joy she really loved. She spoke of her students in such a caring manner. Margaret was an avid reader. She grew beautiful flowers, especially roses. She loved to travel.

In 1934, she married Ray Ralph Boone who was also a teacher in Greenbrier County. Together they built their home in Organ Cave where they raised their three children, Peggy Ann, Roger A., and Daniel R. She stopped teaching to raise their children. Margaret did not start teaching again until their youngest twin boys, Roger and Daniel, were in junior high school. Some of her happiest years were spent raising her three children. Between teaching years, Margaret served as financial secretary at the West Virginia State Prison for Women in Pence Springs for five years. In 1975, she was featured in the book “Out Standing Elementary Teachers of America.” She retired from teaching in 1977.

Margaret was a lifelong member of the Organ Cave community where she was President of the community center for several terms. She was always working to improve the community. She was a civic-minded person. Margaret attended the Salem Presbyterian Church where she taught Sunday school, was President of the Women of the Church, and an elder. She was a charter member and Past President of the C.E.O. Sisterhood, Chapter F. She was active in NEA, the WV Education Association, Greenbrier County Education Association, Classroom Teachers Association, and was a member and Past President of the Greenbrier County Retired Teachers Association. Margaret also belonged to Delta Kappa Gamma Sorority, the Ronceverte Elementary and Organ Cave PTA, Greenbrier Youth Camp, Greenbrier County 4-H Leaders Association, Farm Women’s Club (CEO) Past President, of Organ Cave, associate member of the Organ Cave Ruritan Club, Greenbrier County Red Cross, Ronceverte Woman’s Club where she was President and President of the Southern District Clubs. In 1970 Governor Arch A. Moore presented her with the Distinguished West Virginian Award for Meritorious Service.

Margaret was a member of the first 4-H club in Greenbrier County. Miss Sallie Humphrey was the leader. Not only was she a 4-H member, but Margaret also was a 4-H leader for thirteen years. She attended Girls State Camp and was initiated into the WV All Stars Association.

Margaret was delighted when Greenbrier County decided to build a 4-H Youth Camp, now known as Greenbrier Youth Camp. Coronel H.B. Moore appointed her as one of the original Board of Trustees to develop the Greenbrier County Youth Camp where she served on the managing board. In September 2004, Margaret was presented with a plaque in appreciation of her 50 years of service to the Greenbrier County Youth Camp by the Board of Trustees. She was also appointed trustee emeritus for the Youth Camp.

Her first husband, Ray Boone, died in 1962. In 1976, she married Marshall A. Shanklin .

Margaret was preceded in death by a brother, Harvey Rodgers, who died in infancy, her husbands, Ray Ralph Boone and Marshall A. Shanklin , daughter, Peggy Ann Stallings, son, Roger A. Boone, and stepson, Gordon Shanklin .

Margaret was a devoted mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. She is survived by her son, Colonel Daniel R. Boone, of Organ Cave, daughter-inlaw, Phyllis S. Boone, of Lewisburg, WV, stepdaughter, Leila Shanklin Bennett of Charlotte, NC, her sisters, Denise R. Lee of Lynchburg, VA, and Dolly R. Johnson of Beckley, WV. Surviving grandchildren are Ronda Escobar, Allyson Graves, Jennifer, Ronald “Duke” and George Stallings, Todd Boone, and Terri Boone Dowdy, and stepgrandson, Kevin Johnson.

Her surviving greatgrandchildren are Lincoln Whitman, Alecia, Sarah and Kathleen Escobar, Lindsay, Morgan, Raylen, Bailey Sue Boone, Drew and Tayler Dowdy, and Zackary, Chelsea, Leo Stallings, and Carter Stallings. Also she is survived by one great-greatgranddaughter, Bella.

A very special thanks to her caregivers. All of you were professionals.

Pallbearers will be Paul Rodgers, Roger McDaniel, J.D. Deem, Tim Donovan, Tom Donovan, and Keith Diem.

Visitation will be at the Shanklin Funeral Home, White Sulphur Springs, on Monday, January 17, 2011, from 5 to 7 p.m.

There will be an open casket viewing one hour prior to the services at the Salem Presbyterian Church, Organ Cave, at 2 p.m. Tuesday, January 18, 2011, with Pastor Carl F. Pattison officiating. Burial will follow at the Salem Presbyterian Church Cemetery, Organ Cave, WV.

Shanklin Funeral Home, White Sulphur Springs, is serving the family.
