Gaastra had two generations of scarlet fever in 1900 and 1923. In 1900, my father’s [Clifford Piper] sister died and his grandmother contracted blood poisoning from the scarlet fever germ in a splinter wound. Her arm was amputated on the kitchen table; she died.
