Judith was the daughter of Nicholas Bayard and Elizabeth Rynders. She was baptized Febuary 29, 1740 in the NYC Reformed Dutch Church; Judith married July 03, 1760 in NYC, Jeremiah Van Rensselaer son of John Van Rensselaer and Engeltje Livingston. Jeremiah was baptized in the Reformed Dutch of Albany, NY on August 27, 1738.

Judith & Jeremiah had a son John born in Albany County, NY Dec. 10. 1762. Jeremiah Van Rensselaer became ill and made his will September 16, 1763. It was proved on January 25, 1765. Jeremiah Rensselaer died on February 05, 1764 in Charleston, SC.

Judith, now a young widow, after a time, remarried. Her second husband was William Bruce, a surgeon of the Royal Artillery who subsequently became head of the Medical Department of the British army in New York. Dr. Bruce died 1779, in the West Indies, on the Expedition to St. Lucia under General Grant. Of the children of this union only son Archibald Bruce lived to maturity.

Judith made her will in 1813. She made bequests to her son, John Van Rensselaer and to her grandchildren: Catherine Visscher, Glen Van Rensselaer, Cornelius Van Rensselaer, Jeremiah Van Rensselaer and John Van Rensselaer. Judith left two lots to her grandson Jeremiah, "being in the eighth ward of the city of New York known and distinguished in a certain map or chart of the farm where my father Nicholas Bayard Esquire at the time of his death was seized." She left the remained of her estate to her son Archibald Bruce. In the 1817 Codicil to her will, Judith states her grandson John Van Rensselaer is deceased.

The NYC newspaper notice of the death of Judith Bruce on September 16, 1817 ends with: “Her relations and friends, with those of her sons, General J. J. Van Rensselaer and Dr. Archibald Bruce, are requested to attend her funeral from her late residence No. 12 Broadway, to-marrow afternoon at 5 o'clock.”
