Born on Canaan Plantation in West Baton Rouge parish. He attended LSU and was president of Doherty Hardware Company. He lived at 241 North Street. Death caused by heart attack. He was a member of the Elks, St. James Lodge Masonic lodge, Woodmen of the World, charter member of the Baton Rouge Rotary club and a member of the board of directors of the Protestant Orphan's Home.

He died in Mexico City of a ruptured aorta. The State Department issued "Report of the Death of an American Citizen" on 17 Mar 1932 indicating he was interred in Magnolia Cemetery, Lot 28, Section 3.
