(FAIRBURN, Ga.) Joseph F. "Joe" McManus, 79, of Fairburn, Ga., died March 24, 1997.
Born in Wedowee, Ala., Mr. McManus was a member of Fairburn United Methodist Church for 50 years, where he taught in Sunday school for 15 years, served as a lay delegate for 20 years and also served on the administrative board and on
church committees.
A teacher at Campbell High School in Fairburn for 40 years, he was honored by his students with two dedications of the school annual in his honor. He served in the European Theater of World War II with the Big Red One Division for 2-1/2 years and retired from the U.S. Army Reserve in 1978 as a lieutenant colonel with
27 years of active and reserve duty. He was awarded a bronze and silver star.
Survivors include his wife of 55 years, Mrs. Martha French McManus; a son, Allan McManus of Fairburn; three sisters, Mrs. Mildred Traylor and Mrs. Sarah McConnell of LaGrange, Ga., and Mrs. Tressie Carroll of Fayetteville, Ga.; a brother, Garey McManus of Douglasville, Ga.; and nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were Wednesday, March 26, at 11:30 a.m. at the chapel of Parrott Funeral Home, Dr. Judson Hodges Jr. and the Rev. Bob Gillespie officiating. Interment was at Holly Hill.
In lieu of flowers, those desiring may make donations to Fairburn United Methodist Church, Washington Street, Fairburn, GA 30213. Parrott Funeral Home,
Fairburn, was in charge of arrangements.
