Rev. Father Cornelius Eckl, O.S.B., was a Professor and a Benedictine monk of St. Mary's Abbey (now known as Newark Abbey) in Newark, New Jersey. He was serving at the newly founded St. Anselm's College in Manchester, New Hampshire, when he died from liver failure at age 42. He was initially buried at St. Joseph's Cemetery in New Hampshire before being reinterred at St. Mary's, East Orange, in 1910.
Fr. Cornelius studied at St. Vincent Archabbey in his native Pennsylvania during the early 1870s, where he entered the Order of St. Benedict and was ordained a priest, before coming to St. Mary's Abbey, where he served as Prior from 1885 to 1886. He served as Director of St. Benedict's College in Newark, and Pastor of Sacred Heart parish in Elizabeth, New Jersey, before going to St. Anselm's, which had just opened the year before he died.
