John was the second son of Mathew & Catharine Arbuckle. John and his little brother Alexander (Alex) Hamilton Arbuckle married the Phillips sisters, Elizabeth and Martha respectively. John sold his portion of the farm to Alex and bought land in Hendricks County in 1857 where he farmed. John's first born son was named after his brother, Alex. John's middle name "Marion" is after Revolutionary War Continental Army officer, Francis Marion the Swamp Fox.
