J. Will Mefford, 75, of 1607 Thirtieth street, well known Hannibal contractor and a former sheriff of Marion County, died at 5:40 O'clock Sunday morning in St. Elizabeth Hospital where he was removed after he was suddenly stricken with a heart attack at 4 a.m.
Funereal Services will be held Tuesday afternoon at 2 o'clock at the Schwartz Funeral Home, The Rev. John W. Golden will be in charge and burial will be in Riversdie Cemetery. Friends may view the remains at the funeral home.
Mr. Mefford was born in Lexington, Ky., on September 3, 1874, son of George T. and Belle Mefford. The family moved to Hunnewell when he was a small child and he later moved to Monroe City, coming to Hannibal from there. He was married in this city to Ida Mae Rouse.
Mr. Mefford established his contracting business after moving to Hannibal and was widely known in this commuinty.
He served as deputy sheriff of Marion County under Sheriff William Johnson from 1912 to January 1, 1916, and in 1916 he was elected sheriff, serving one term, until January 1, 1920. During World War I he was president of the Marion County draft board.
After the war Mr. Mefford was again a deputy sheriff, serving under the late Sheriff Pete Turner, and later was elected Constable of Mason Township. Since then he had been engaged in the contracting business and was associated in the work with his son, Clarence O. Mefford.
Surviving are his wife; one son, Clarence; a granddaughter, Mrs. Janet Williams of Hannibal; a great grandson, Larry Wayne Williams; two brothers, Roy R. Mefford of Hannibal and Floyd T. Mefford of Enid, Oklahoma, and a sister, Mrs. Flora Moore of this city. Two Children died in infancy.
Mr. Mefford was a member of First Christian Church. He was a charter member of Carpenters and Joiners of America, Local 607 and was affiliated with the Royal Neighbors of America.
