James "Jim" Sandy Boren, Sr. passed away on Friday, August 1, 2014, in San Antonio due to complications of dementia following a fall at his home six weeks ago.

He was born to Dr. Homer Grant Boren of Carthage, Texas, and mother, Maggie, who died shortly after childbirth. He was raised on his family ranch in Barksdale, Texas, where he graduated from Barksdale High School. He also graduated from Sul Ross State University, and attended law school at Baylor University. It was at Baylor that he met his future wife, Glenda Jean. Immediately following Baylor graduation, they married and had two children, Jimmy and Dayna.

Jim was a former military officer once stationed in Izmir, Turkey. He retired from the Defense Language Institute at Lackland AFB in San Antonio.

In San Antonio, he and his wife, Glenda, were active in many organizations including the Alamo City Republican Women's Club, their children's activities, and numerous charitable organizations. He retired when his wife, Glenda, became ill with cancer. He became her caretaker until her death in 1988. He later married Mary Jo Bowers, and they remained married until her death in 2011, where he again performed the role of caretaker.

A brilliant man of genius IQ who spoke multiple languages, Jim resettled in Boerne, Texas, during the last chapter of his life. It was during this time that he became very involved in volunteer work, including a stint as a docent at the San Antonio Zoo, a volunteer at the Hill Country Animal League, and his favorite role as usher at Boerne First Baptist Church.

He was fortunate to have both of his grown children and their families within a short drive. He was especially proud of all of their accomplishments including watching both grandsons become Eagle Scouts in 2011, as well as their combined athletic, educational and professional accomplishments. Jim was an extraordinarily generous and humble man, and he was a guiding force to his children and grandchildren. His presence and influence in their lives will never be replaced.

He was preceded in death by his mother and father, and by his two wives, Glenda Jean (Branch) Boren and Mary Jo (Sawyer) Boren. He was also predeceased by his in-laws, Juanita and Glenn Thomas Branch of Lufkin, Texas, and Iris Sawyer of Leon Valley.

He is survived by his son, James Sandy Boren Jr. and wife Sharon, and his grandchildren Grant Thomas and Emily Jean Boren; and Valerie Rose Cartwright, all of San Antonio. He is also survived by his daughter, Dayna Linn Cartwright and husband Brian and grandson, Nicholas Grant of Boerne.

The family wishes to thank Dr. Cabello and the 3rd floor staff at Methodist Transplant and Specialty for their care during the last six weeks. They also wish to thank Dr. Ken Smith and Dr. Michael Blanchett along with the entire staff at Christus Santa Rosa Sister Mary Hospice, who provided comfort in his final days. Lastly, they appreciate the visits of staff and congregation from Boerne First Baptist Church and the support to his family from the Boerne community.

A celebration of his life will be held at Ebensberger-Fisher Funeral Home on Sunday, August 10, 2014, from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m.

The funeral will take place on Monday, August 11, 2014, at 11:00 a.m. at First Baptist Church in Boerne.

Interment will be later that afternoon at 2:00 p.m. at Sunset Memorial Park on Austin Highway.
