Fred was the son of Henry Palmer and Delilah Ann Chisum Chisum. He married Emma Ruggles on 30 Jul 1911 in Roberts County, Texas. Fred and Emma had at least eight children: Ralph Claude Chisum, Archie Walter Chisum, Marion Woodrow Chisum, Lea Leverne Chisum, Claude Wallace Chisum, Donald Keith Chisum, Von Kenneth Chisum, and Edward Dale Chisum. Ralph and Archie were named for Fred's younger brothers. Von was a twin of Don's who died shortly after birth.
