Nelson Alvin Shahan was the son of Alexander T. Shahan (1849-1921) and Mary E. Stewart (1853- before 1900). His mother is difficult to track and little is known about her. Her parents were William and Margaret Stewart. Mary had a brother Alvin A. Stewart (1858-1923.)
I do not know if Nelson had siblings but there were numerous Shahans in the Belaire, Belmont, OH area where Nelson and his father lived. Nelson's mother appears to have died before 1900. His father lived with him and Ella over the years.

Nelson and Ella did not have children. However in the 1910 census, Arthur Patterson, age 16, was living with them. He was not a step-son or son. Arthur had parents, Frank H. and Ella (Jeffers) Patterson and two siblings, Elva and Clarence. Arthur Patterson's parents had divorced and evidently the two boys were living with either relatives or friends. Nelson and Elva Shahan evidently were just friends attempting to help out. Arthur named a later son after Nelson and Nelson died at Arthur's house. Nelson and Arthur also operated a restaurant together in 1940's.

In the 1930 census, Clarence A. Miller, age 27, was living with Nelson and Ella. This was Ella's nephew from Indiana. He was the son of Clarence "Melvin" Miller (1882-1946.)

In March of 1902, Ella visited Cleveland for 2 weeks. I don't know why. But Nelson and Ella moved to Cleveland before 1923. Nelson was in the restaurant business but I don't think he always owned his own restaurant. However, I believe he did well in life. Ella was able to travel on her own and her Miller niece, Polly, in Indiana remembered they had a beautiful home in Cincinnati.

I have searched a lot and cannot find many useful news items on Nelson or Ella nor have I found full obituaries. The pictures come from Ella's brother Frank's family in Indiana.
