James served in the Colorado National Guard and US Army during WWII and in civilian life was service manager for Munson-Smith Motors in Tacoma, WA for many years. He later owned and operated his own Texaco service station and also was a marine diesel engine specialist for the Tacoma Wire Rope Co., in Tacoma, WA. Several years after his retirement, he relocated to Albuquerque, NM, where he pursued numerous hobbies, such as jewelry making and crafts. He m. 12 Feb 2008 in Tacoma, Pierce Co., WA Viola Winifred (Phelps) Stone Weinreich Kundert.
