Dr. Harold Empey Young, Jr., noted Midvale physician and surgeon, died on July 12, 1997 at his home.
He was born July 1, 1917, the son of Harold E. Young and Josephine Barton Young. He attended the Salt Lake City schools and graduated from West High School in 1934. He served an LDS mission to Switzerland from 1937 to 1939. He married his sweetheart, Louise Matheson on September 16, 1940 in the Salt Lake Temple. He graduated from the University of Utah in 1941, and from the Northwestern University School of Medicine in Chicago, Illinois, in December of 1943. He interned at St. Luke's Hospital in Chicago.
During World War II he served in the United States Army as physician and surgeon. He was stationed in Atlanta, Georgia and at Camp Rucker in Alabama. He also served overseas in the U. S. Medical Hospital in Augsburg, Germany. After his discharge from the Army, he completed a surgical residency at St. Mark's Hospital in Salt Lake City and began his medical practice in Midvale at the Hosmer & Lindsey Clinic. He established his own Midvale Medical Center in 1962 where he practiced until his retirement in 1986. He served the entire south part of Salt Lake Valley and was loved because of his special individual care and attention to all his patients. He was on the staff of both St. Mark's Hospital of Salt Lake and the old Cottonwood Maternity Center in Murray, and later on the staff of the newly built Cottonwood Hospital in Murray. He served as a clinical professor of Family Medicine at the University of Utah Medical School for many years.
He was a Charter Fellow of the American Academy of Family Physicians, a diplomat and charter member of the American Board of Family Practice. He was a member of the Salt Lake County Medical Society, the Utah State Medical Society, the American Medical Association, and served as a delegate to the Utah State Medical Association. He helped organize the Utah Chapter of the American Academy of Family Practice, and served as secretary for seven years and as its president during 1964-65.
He was a lifelong member of the LDS Church and was proud of his heritage as a great grandson of Brigham Young. He was a High Priest, serving as a teacher and advisor of priesthood quorums, as president of the Sunday School in the East Midvale 1st Ward for 13 years and in the bishopric of the East Midvale 1st Ward for five years. He was called as a member of the High Council for the newly organized Midvale North Stake where he served until his retirement. He and Louise traveled widely throughout the world and enjoyed learning of other peoples, cultures, beauties and wonders of creation. He was preceded in death by a son, Robert.
He is survived by his wife Louise, Midvale; his children, Carole (Mrs. Gerald P. Ford) Tempe, Arizona; Margaret Young, a daughter-in-law, Midvale; David H. (Diane) Young, Salt Lake City; Robin (Mrs. F. Bruce Goldthorpe) Tempe, Arizona; Kevin J. (Maurine) Young, Bountiful; 19 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. He is also survived by two brothers, Willard B. Young and Warren R. Young, both of Salt Lake City.
Funeral services will be held on Thursday, July 17th at 12 noon in the Midvale North Stake Center, 97 West 7500 South, Midvale. Friends may call at Goff Mortuary, 8090 So. State Street, Midvale, Wednesday July 16th from 6-8:30 p.m. and at the stake center from 10:30-11:30 a.m. Thursday prior to the funeral. Interment will be in the Midvale City Cemetery.
