West Jordan--James Alphonzo Bateman 88, 7189 S. 1300 West, died Thursday at 10:30 a.m. at the home of a duaghter, Mrs. Roland Page, 12990 S. 1700 West, of natural causes. he was patriarch to the West Jordan Stake, Church of jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, for more than 20 years. mr. Bateman was born Nov. 1, 1870, at Brigham City, a son of James M. and Maria Watkins Bateman. On October. 11, 1893, he married Parylee Pixton in Salt Lake Temple. mrs. Bateman died Nov. 22, 1948. he had been a foreman with United States Smelting, Mining and Refining Co. At the time of his retirement he had worked there for 30 years. Active in the Church, Mr. Bateman served as a counselor in the West Jordan Ward bishopric for nine years, was a member of the presidency of both the West Jordan Stake Mutual Improvement Association and Sunday School. Survivors include one son and six daughter: Earl Preston Bateman, Mrs. Fred (LaVern) Coleman, both of West Jordan; Mrs. Roland (Cleo) Page, Riverton; Mrs. Charles (edna) Cockayne, Yuba City, Calif.; Mrs. George (Norma) Simon, Mrs. Glen (Nora) Renshaw, both of Salt Lake City; Mrs. Parley (Edith) Stoker, Midvale; one brother, Ezra Bateman, West Jordan; 24 grandchildren; 42 great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be conducted Monday at 12:30 p.m. in the west Jordan Stake House, 7950 South State St., Sunday from 6 to 8 p.m. and Monday in the stake house from 11 a.m. until the time of services.
