Son of Captain Gideon Randall and Jerusha Coffin, he died at sea. The private genealogical records of William C. Folger included in the Vital Records of Nantucket to 1850 describe him as "falling from aloft of his ship". The full date of death was taken from his masonic membership card where he is listed as a charter member of the Star in the East Lodge in New Bedford, December 10, 1823.
He married Martha Sturtevant in 1818 and their son, Charles Sturtevant Randall, served Massachusetts as a US Congressman for three terms, from 1889 to 1895.
