Mr. Swetland was born in Winnebago county, Illinois in 1851 and was 76 years old at the time of his death.
At the age of 12, he moved to Fayette county, Iowa.
He was married to Eva M. Hanna, May 12, 1875, near Fremont Center. Three children were born to this union: Lottie (Mrs. J.J. Van Ostrand) of Orchard; Eva (Mrs. John Couch) of Brunswick and Sam of Royal. Besides his wife and children, he is survived by fifteen grandchildren and nine great grandchildren.
In the fall of 1878, Mr. Swetland went to Yankton, S.D. and walked seventy five miles to the place in Antelope county, northwest of Royal, where he wished to make his homestead.
His brother, Sam, now of Seattle, Wash. had a homestead two miles away and with his help and that of two more homesteaders, he built a sod house 12x16. He dug his first well with a spade and drew out the water with a wooden pail.
When this work was accomplished, he fitted out a covered wagon and drove to Yankton to meet his wife and little daughters. This was forty eight years ago in February.
The Swetland farm in time became one of he most attractive places in the county.
Mr. Swetland, when he tired of farming, engaged in the real estate business for fifteen years. He was forced to discontinue because of failing health.
After living twenty three years on the homestead, Mr. Swetland moved to Royal, buying an unimproved piece of land at the edge of town.
Mr. Swetland enjoyed an extensive circle of friends and placed great value on his friendships.--Norfolk News
