AUTO KILLS TWO YOUTHS; DRIVER HELD
Victims Hurled 56 Feet by Car Operated by Salt Lake Boy
Two youths were killed Friday at 11 p.m. when they were struck by an automobile one block south of Union avenue on State street.
The victims were Vance Jenkins, 17 (sic-15), and Ivan Peckham, 17, both of Midvale.
They were struck by a machine being driven south on State street by Edwin Zugel, 16, of Sixth West and Fifty-third South streets. Zugel later was placed in the county jail, pending completion of an investigation of the accident.
Chief Traffic Deputy J. Wallace West, who investigated the accident, said the youths' bodies were hurled 56 feet by the impact. He said the machine continued 160 feet after striking the youths.
Orin Labrum, 19, of Midvale, who was driving immediately behind Zugel's car, said he was driving about 30 miles an hour and believed the other machine also was traveling at the same rate.
Victim's Skulls Fractured
The victim's skulls were broken and Jenkins was believed also to have suffered a fractured neck.
With Zugel in his automobile were Earl Healy, 16, of 4586 Cherry street; Charles White, 17, of Murray, and Miss Lucille Shaw, 15, of Sixty-fourth South and State streets.
In Labrum's car were Labrum, Willis Dunn, 18, and Miss Maurine Hick, 18, of Midvale.
They stopped at the scene of the accident and assisted in placing the bodies of the two youths in the machine of Harris Hubbard, 17, of 654 Winchester street, Midvale, who took the bodies to the Midvale hospital.
Zugel boarded Labrum's machine to follow the other car, but lost sight of it before reaching Midvale. He had not been informed where Hubbard planned to take the bodies, authorities were told, and had Labrum drive him to Sandy, hoping to find the other machine there.
Driver Reports
Unable to find the other car, Labrum drove to Murray, where Zugel reported the accident to Deputy Marshal H. Anderson, who detained him temporarily.
Zugel and his companions had been at a dance at Midvale high school, the youth told authorities.
They decided to go to another dance at Sandy and were on their way when the accident occurred.
Peckham is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Charles Peckham of Midvale. Jenkins' parents are dead and the youth had been living at the home of his brother, George Jenkins, in Midvale, authorities said.

Mr. and Mrs. Jenkins died in 1922 and since that time their son lived with his brother and sister-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. George D. Jenkins. Other survivors are three brothers, Elton L., William J., and Melvin Carl Jenkins, all of Midvale; three sisters, Mrs. Annie C. Jenkins McRae, Mrs. Esther L. Haeckel and Mrs. Eva Fern Webber, all of Los Angeles. Vance was attending the Jordan high school.
Joint funeral services are planned by relatives of the boys.
