In 1816, when. his grandfather Joshua Sprague passed away, Elias was 7 years old. Joshua's will read: "...for love and good will, and natural affection, deeded to his "dutiful grandsons" Elias and Nehemiah Sprague, and for his honorable maintenance, the homestead on Pawtucket River (is given)." For over a century the Spragues were prominent in the religious and political history eastern Ohio.

Elias' first wife was Sarah Cutler Larking. Their children were Emily, Albert, Ann J., Abigail, and Mary. Tragically, Sarah died on January 1, 1853.

On October 27, 1853, Elias married Mary Elizabeth Case (born December 22, 1833 - died April 9, 1899). She became mother to his children then had 5 children of their own: William Anson, Etna, Nora, Minnie and Phebe.

Elias changed his profession from farmer to merchant around the time Sarah died. He did quite well at this and made enough money to hire a live-in maid by 1870.

Elias died in Linton Township from diabetes.
