Leah was the seventh and last child born to Recompense and Adaline Borden Stanbery. Her siblings (Sallie, Franklin, Margaretta, Alexander, Anna, and Samuel) were all born in Ohio, where the family was living in the 1880 Census. Leah was born the following year in Little Rock, Arkansas. Shortly after the family moved to Texas, Leah's mother died in Galveston when Leah was not yet three years old.

As a child, Leah spent much time with her Borden aunts and cousins in Ohio. She was a favorite of her Aunt Lilla Borden, who never married, and for many years lived with her in Elmore, Ohio. In 1940, Leah, who also never married, was living in Toledo, Ohio, with her sister Margie Stanbery McMahon and Margie's husband Thomas.

Leah died in a nursing home in Toledo, Ohio, in 1959 and is buried in Forest Cemetery.
