Johanna was born in Germany. On some ancestry sites she is listed as coming from East Prussia. The spelling of her last name could have been spelled several ways: Bahr, Baier, Beier, Behr, or Beyer. The newspaper obituary of her death spells it Beyer. Johanna immigrated to the United States in 1870 with at least her brother, Herman, and possibly others.

She married a man by the name of Lewis Blum (also from Germany). Together they had one daughter named Laura Josephine, born in 1873 in Joplin, MO. while they were en route to Kansas. They were headed to Kansas to homestead the land. Johanna and Lewis were living in Cherokee, Kansas, in 1875. Lewis Blum died sometime between 1875 and 1878, in possibly the Oklahoma Territory, killed by Indians while searching for land to homestead.

At some point, Johanna moved to Humboldt,Allen, Kansas, where she is found on the 1880 census, as a single mother, raising her daughter while she worked as a servant for the William Redfield family. The Redfields owned the Redfield Carriage Manufacturing Company. Johanna's daughter, Laura, attended school, and also helped care for the Redfield's two children.

On March 14, 1882, Johanna married Silas Ratcliff,in either Iola,KS (the county seat)or Humboldt, KS, where she had been living. Silas Ratcliff was a farmer and a carpenter by trade, who may have also been working at the carriage manufacturing company, and may have met Hanna there. Silas was nine years older than Hanna. He adopted Laura as his own. Silas and Hanna gradually moved north through Kansas, living for a time in Anderson County, KS. Eventually, in 1895, they purchased a 160 acre plot of land in Center, Doniphan County, Kansas. (Center township was later called Troy, KS.) Together, Johanna and Silas had four daughters and one son.

Silas died in 1931,was cremated and it is not known where his ashes went. Johanna continued to live on the Ratcliff farm in Troy with her daughter,Gussie, and son,Thomas, until her death in 1943. Johanna was a pioneer woman of Kansas who had both beauty and character. She was a good , kind woman and was loved by all who knew her. She was a devout Christian and faithfully attended the German Lutheran church in Troy.
