Also known as Jean Michel Merot, he came to St. Clair Co. in 1840 with his family, from Plobsheim, near Strasbourg, Alsace-Lorraine, France. His was the first and the only Merod family to travel to America and that is why the name is so common today. He married Eva Fried, daughter of Johann Friedrich Fried and Maria Magdalena Jacob, on November 18, 1823. They were the parents of seven children, six of whom survived to adulthood, they were:
Eve m. George Birkner, Michael m. Caroline Goeltz, twins Anne Marie m. Jacob Wagner, and Salome Marie m. Johann George Wagner, Frederick m. Caroline Wehrung, Jacob(died young), and Johannes m. Charlotte Philippine Wehrung.
It is fact that every Merod in the United States can be traced back to this Johann Michael. Of his three sons, only two, Michael and John, had sons of their own to pass on the name. There were approximately ten great grandsons and many of them had only one or fewer sons of their own. So if you ever run into a Merod it is a rare circumstance indeed. Moreover since Johann Michael settled in St. Clair Co., every Merod originated from that area though in recent times they have scattered throughout the country.
