Eugene "Gene" Francis Higgins passed away surrounded by loved ones Friday, July 11, 2014. Service: Memorial Mass will be at 1:30 p.m. Monday, July 28, in the chapel at St. Vincent de Paul Catholic Parish. A graveside service will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday, July 29, in Dallas-Fort Worth National Cemetery. Gene was born in Wessington, S.D., on June 12, 1925. He led a joyful life that touched many people. He was the eldest of nine brothers and sisters, and loved and supported his family after his father's death. He served in the United States Navy in World War II. After returning from the war, he met and married Janet Mae Hohlfield on Sept. 3, 1960. They have three children, Maribeth Higgins Mata, Thomas Jay Higgins and Gena Higgins Richards, whom they raised in Amarillo. Since moving to Arlington, Gene was involved in his local church, St. Vincent de Paul Catholic Parish in Arlington. Gene loved to take walks, was a connoisseur of cookies and always had a funny thought to brighten anyone's day. He joined his wife, Janet; parents, Joseph and Gertrude; and three siblings, Daniel Higgins, Roger Higgins and LaVonne Tighe, in heaven. Survivors: His joy lives on in his brothers and sisters, Michael Higgins, Patricia MacNeil, Robert Higgins and Joseph Higgins; brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Gene and Joan Empson; children, Maribeth (Ruben), Tom and Gena (Bill); grandchildren, Jessica Johnson (Matthew), Alex Mata and Noah Richards; and numerous nieces and nephews.
