Gilbert A. Hoffman Jr. — Orangeburg

Graveside services for Gilbert A. Hoffman Jr., 86, of 1687 Longwood Drive, will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, May 7, 2008, in the Memorial Park Cemetery, with the Rev. Larry Williams officiating.

Mr. Hoffman died Sunday afternoon, May 4, at Longwood Plantation.

He was born in Orangeburg, the son of the late Gilbert A. Hoffman and Gertie Dukes Hoffman. He was a proud graduate of The Citadel where he served on the boxing team. As a career, he chose education, where he loved and inspired many children and was a former member of the S.C. Education Association and served on the S.C. Board of Education. He also believed in service to his church and the city, state, and national government. At First Baptist Church, he served as Deacon, Sunday School teacher and on many committees throughout the years. His civic service included the National Guard, where he was a life member, the Orangeburg County Election Commission and the American Legion. Mr. Hoffman was a U.S. Army veteran in World War II, member of the S.C. National Guard and served as a Colonel in the U.S. Army Reserve. He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Eleanor Baggott Hoffman.

Survivors include a daughter and son-in-law, James B. and Trudy Draughn of Brandon, Miss.; two grandchildren, Eleanor Hoffman Draughn of Chantilly, Va. and James B. Draughn III of Atlanta, Ga.; two great-grandchildren.

Dukes-Harley Funeral of Orangeburg is in charge of arrangements.
