DEATH TAKES PROMINENT MIDVALE MAN
Head of Mortuary, Civic Leader Dies at Residence

Midvale - C. I. Goff, 64, president of the C. I. Goff & Son mortuary and a prominent civic and church leader in Salt Lake county for more than 40 years, died at his home, 37 West Center Street, Monday at 2:20 p.m. of a cerebral hemorrhage.
Prominent in LDS Church activities throughout his life, Mr. Goff was a senior high councilman of the East Jordan LDS Stake at the time of his death.
Born in Midvale July 27, 1877, a son of Hyrum and Maria T. Arnold Goff, Mr. Goff was graduated from Brigham Young University in 1898. Two months later he went to Manassa, Colo., to become principal of the LDS Church in the San Luis valley.
Returning to Midvale three years later, he became principal of the East Jordan district schools. He founded the C. I. Goff & Son Mortuary 30 years ago.
Mr. Goff formerly was a member of the Jordan and East Jordan LDS state boards of education.
He served for eight years as postmaster in Midvale by appointment from President Theodore Roosevelt and President William H. Taft. He served as postmaster from 1930 until 1935 by appointment from President Herbert Hoover.
He served as a Salt Lake county deputy sheriff for many years and was Midvale justice of the peace for several terms. A charter member of the Midvale Progressive club, he served as secretary of the organization for three years. He was a former member of the board of directors of the People's State bank and the Midvale State bank.
Mr. Goff married Sabina Josephine Larson in the Salt Lake LDS temple September 2, 1903.
Surviving him are his widow, a son, Louis E. Goff of Midvale; three daughters, Mrs. Cora G. Dahl of Park City, Mrs. Melba G. Matthews of Magna and Mrs. Carol G. Kemp of Midvale; two brothers, Alma A. Goff of Salt Lake City and Harvey Goff of Copperton; six sisters, Mrs. Ella G. Halstrom of San Diego, Cal.; Mrs. Melissa G. Smith of Midvale, Mrs. Clarissa G. Warner of St. Louis, Mo.; Mrs. Clara G. Wilson of Provo, Mrs. Edith G. Bennion of Salt Lake City and Mrs. Mary G. Neilson of Riverton, and eight grandchildren.
Funeral services will be conducted Thursday at 1 p.m. in the Second LDS ward chapel by Henry Beckstead, bishop. Friends may call at the C. I. Goff & Son mortuary Wednesday afternoon and evening and at the family home Thursday from 10 a.m. until time of services. Burial will be in the Midvale City cemetery.
