will follow at Carlsbad Cemetery.

Visitation will be 1-8 p.m. today at West Funeral Home.

Mrs. Burnett died Friday, Feb. 10, 2006, at Landsun Health Service Center.

Ara Faye Burnett was born Aug. 9, 1915, to James Thomas Dennis and Mary Rachel Lyon in Hall County, Texas, Lodge (later named Plaska) Community. The family lived in a big two-story house next door to the Church of Christ. Her father was an elder in the church and a leader in the community. Mrs. Burnett was a long-time member of Southside Church of Christ in Carlsbad.

She was married to Blufford Isaac Burnett on May 19, 1933, at the Methodist parsonage in Lodge. They had two children and were married for 68 years.

The couple moved to Carlsbad in 1952. Later that fall, Mrs. Burnett helped to open the new Sears store downtown, (now Skeen's Furniture). She was the manager of the drapery and linen department. She assisted customers in selecting drapery fabric and then measuring windows in the home for custom made drapes, made locally. She said at one time, she had draped most all the homes on Riverside Drive.

When the Sears retail store closed in the late 60's, Mrs. Burnett moved to the new Sears catalogue store on West Mermod Street and managed the telephone room. She worked there until Jan. 3, 1981, when she retired after 29 years of service.

In her spare time, she assisted her husband in growing vegetables on their little three-acre farm on Standpipe Road. Their friends came to visit and buy the produce. She canned or froze the vegetables for winter eating. Her baking specialties included chocolate pie, pecan pie, and a variety of cakes. She was the family baker and could always whip up a cake for birthdays or holidays.

She was a stellar seamstress and made many of the garments worn by her daughter and granddaughter, even making her granddaughter's wedding dress in 1974.

She was preceded in death by a son, Bobby Don Burnett, on May 16, 1991, and by her husband, Blufford Isaac Burnett, on Aug. 3, 2001. Mrs. Burnett had one brother and four sisters. She was the last living member of her family.

Survivors include one daughter, Betty Patton and her husband Pete of Carlsbad; two grandchildren, Susan Willingham and her husband Darrell of Carlsbad, and Lt. Col. Dwight C. Patton and wife, Ceci, of Fort Lewis, Wash.; three great-grandchildren, Amanda Ackman and Heath Willingham, both of Carlsbad, and 2nd Lt. James Patton, Fort Biggs Army Air Field, El Paso, Texas; and one great-great grandson, Michael Isaac Ackman.

Pallbearers are Darrell Willingham, Chase Brown, Heath Willingham, 2nd Lt. James Pete Patton, Austin Lewis and Chester Berry.
