In 1860, he was a shoemaker living with his family in Earl Township, Lancaster County, Pennsylvania.

A Civil War veteran, he enlisted in Lancaster August 8, 1862, mustered into federal service there August 11 as a private with Co. A, 122nd Pennsylvania Infantry, and honorably discharged with his company May 15, 1863.

Cause of death is listed as "chronic myocarditis."
