Son of Asa Thomas May and Mary Caroline Bostwick May. When Joseph was about 8 years old, his father, Asa, a Baptist preacher, decided to move the family to what is now Coldspring, San Jacinto County, Texas. Unfortunately, Asa contracted cholera and died in 1850, his burial place still unknown but it is suspected that his mother, Elizabeth "Betsey" Browning May Sessions Grey, may be buried with him. Mary moved her family back to Lowndes County, Alabama to have the support of her family there.

Joseph joined Company G, 3rd Alabama Infantry, CSA, on May 14, 1862. He was captured July 5, 1863 at Gettysburg. He was taken first to Fort McHenry, Maryland and later transferred to Fort Delaware, Delaware on July 9, 1863. He was released on June 14, 1865 after Oath of Allegiance. He was described at that time as 5 feet 11 inches tall, with a fair complexion, dark hair and blue eyes.

Joseph married Jerusha Rives on March 4, 1861. Together they had daughter Lillian who was born after Joseph joined the Confederate army. While Joseph was help prisoner, Jerusha died in October 1864.

Joseph remained single for many years finally remarrying to Amelia Mae Kirk on April 15, 1881 in Benton, Lowndes County, Alabama. Together they had at least five children:

William Henry May
Edwin Kirk May
Pauline May
