John was born in Ohio and spent his childhood in Harvey County, Kansas. John had a touch of wanderlust, moving his family in turn to Richmond Beach, WA; Plumer, ID, High River, AB, Nanton, AB and finally settling in Choteau, MT. After retiring, he moved to Spokane, WA.

John worked as a butcher, starting with a horse-drawn meat wagon and progressing to ownership of a meat market. When a "supermarket" came to Choteau, he went into Cattle buying and selling.
