Ralph Waldo Allen was born 9 Sep 1887 near Halstead, Kansas. His mother died shortly after giving birth to Ralph's younger sister Elsie in 1889. The family moved to Friendswood TX between 1895 and 1900, where they became fruit farmers, raising figs, the common cash crop of the Quakers of Friendswood. Ralph grew up to become a printer and married the former Amy Josephine Nyberg, daughter of Finnish immigrants, on 18 May 1910. The young family lived in Houston and Nashville, TN as he pursued his career. Ralph also was an amateur photographer and took many, early twentieth century family photos which survive today. Back in Houston Amy died in the great Flu Epidemic of 1818-1819, only two months after youngest daughter Rose Pauline was born. Broken hearted, Ralph placed three of their four children with local family and set off for California, as did Amy's parents. Eldest daughter Margaret went to live with Ralph's sister Elsie Allen Smith in Friendswood. Only son Ralph Leonard was placed with Ralph's Aunt Sarah Hannah Allen Green in Friendswood, TX. Rose Pauline went to live with Ralph's deceased wife's brother John Albert Nyberg and his wife Nana Leona Noonan Nyberg in the Heights of Houston, TX. Only daughter Mary Jane went to California with Ralph and his beloved Amy's parents. Once in California, Mary Jane lived with grandparents John Victor Nyberg and Anna Paulina Rangell Nyberg. Ralph lived in Los Angeles until his last years, when in 1966 he moved back to Houston. He lived for a while with daughter Rose, but his continued failing health required long term hospitalization. Ralph Waldo Allen died in Houston on 19 Aug 1968.
