Enlisted at age 30 as a private in Co. I, 141st Illinois Infantry, and served January 1, 1865 to August 24, 1865.

Lived in Bond Co., Illinois, married to Lousia, had two sons: James Charles, b. in 1858 and John, b. in 1861. While the boys were still young, Lousia died. He then married Sarah Ann Ray on July 21, 1864. After the war, the family lived in Hartville, Missouri, for about five years during which time three more children were born: William Anthony, Mahala and Early. In 1873 Stephen and Sarah re-returned to Illinois where a daughter, Mary Caldonia, was born. Later the same year, the family moved by wagon to Eastland, Texas, where Stephen farmed and where Sarah Ann gave birth to three more children: Magdalena, Charles Edward and Rosa. During the summer of 1880 Sarah Ann died in Eastland. On December 19, 1880, Stephen married his third wife, Sallie Catherine Floyd. in 1891, the family moved to Dickens County, Texas.
