John Alfred Beard was born 16 September 1880 in Kentucky. In 1900 in Keltner, Adair County, Kentucky, John was enumerated in the home of "Killus" [Achilles] Tartar and wife Mary B. Tarter as brother in law. This Mary was John's sister Mary Bell Beard Tartar. Two homes away were his sister Mary Beard Keltner and family and next page was family of Zachariah Beard. On World War I draft papers, John Alfred Beard of Sangamon County, Illinois was a miner for the Springfield Coal Company; he listed his next of kin as his nephew Wilbert Beard of Sangamon County. John's birth date was given as 6 September 1879 on this record. In 1920, John was forty and listed as the brother in law in the home of his brother Aaron's widow, Myrtle Beard of Clear Lake, Sangamon Co, Illinois. He was a miner. John died on 3 February 1920 in Spaulding, Sangamon County, apparently immediately after this census. He was buried at Wolf Creek Cemetery in Sangamon County. He never married.
