Phonograph-Herald, Nov 8, 2000, p. 4:

Carrie H. Mortensen, 102, died October 28, 2000 at Mercy Care Center in Omaha.

Funeral services were held Wednesday, November 1st at 1:00 p.m. at St. Mark's Lutheran Church in St. Paul with the Rev. Larry Lepper officiating....

Burial was in the South Logan Cemetery at St. Paul. Pallbearers were Larry Mortensen, Steve Mortensen, Jim Powell, Ted Mortensen, Ken Mortensen and Douglas Schumann.

She was born September 8, 1898 in Lincoln to Ole and Matilde Olsen.

At an early age the family moved to a farm in Howard county. She was confirmed into the Lutheran church at an early age.

At the age of eight years old her mother and infant sister died. She elected to forfeit her education to stay home and manage the house and help rear her brothers and sister. However she managed to balance her household duties and attend school, graduating from the eighth grade.

While attending a church box social she met a young Danish immigrant. although he didn't buy her box lunch that evening, this meeting started the romance between them. She married Martin Mortensen in the Cushing Lutheran Church parsonage April 6, 1918.

They first lived in the Cushing area, later moving to a farm near Dannevirke, then to farms in the Cushing area after WWI.

They had five children, Donald, Dorothy, Ellen, Florence and Howard.

Mr. Mortensen died of a heart attack March 1, 1937. The family continued to farm for three years when they elected to sell and moved to St. Paul.

Following the war years, she was busy welcoming grandchildren into her life. Her greatest joy was to have them circled around her chair as she read Bible stories to them or playing games with them in the years. She was always there for them.

She is survived by her children, Don and Estella Mortensen, Ellen and Ray Paulsen, Florence and Gene Cline; and a daughter-in-law, Virginia Hunt; 11 grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandsons.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Ole and Matilde Olsen; husband, Martin Mortensen; a daughter, Dorothy Wagner in 1960, a son, Howard Mortensen in 1972; a sister, Lila Delaney; brothers, Albert and Harve Olsen; and a granddaughter, Virginia Mortensen.
