Mary was born in Kent, Ohio to Frank Joseph Rooney and Mary Louise (née Fitzgerald) Rooney. On November 1, 1930 she married her husband James Roy Chappell. They had two children during their marriage, James "Red" Francis Chappell and Janice Marie (née Chappell) Sebeny.

Mary had passed away peacefully at her residence 1349 Arnold Ave., on Thursday, March 9, 1995, at the age of 85.

She was cremated and later buried with her sister Esther Marcella (née Rooney) Lowe.
