Dr. Corinne M. Milburn, 83, of Elk Point, South Dakota, passed away, Friday, July 18, 2014 at Prairie Estates Care Center in Elk Point.

Corinne was born on September 20, 1930, to Ramsey and Corinne (Neal) Martin in Alexandria, Louisiana.

After graduating from Marian College, an all women’s Catholic college, in Indianapolis, Indiana, with a degree in chemistry she met and married Sidney E. Milburn in June, 1952. Following the birth of son Sidney they moved, along with her mother, to Tuskegee, Alabama, where her husband obtained a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree from Tuskegee University.

While he attended school Corinne worked at the Carver Institute at Tuskegee University as a lab technician involved in a project working with HELA tissue cells to develop a process of growing human tissue cells. The original cells were taken from an African American woman dying of cancer. These cells were used by Dr. Jonas Salk in his polio vaccine research. The HELA cells are still being cultivated and used in many ongoing research studies today.

After Dr. Milburn graduated the family, including her mother “Granny”, moved to Elk Point in 1957 where her husband practiced veterinary medicine until his death in 1994.

Following the birth of her second child, Deborah, in 1964, Corinne began her second career in education teaching chemistry, physics and biology at Elk Point High School. She earned a Master’s of Education degree from U.S.D., began teaching at the university and was awarded a Doctorate’s of Education in 1976.

Very involved in developing student teacher curriculum Corinne became Assistant Dean of the School of Education, a position she held until her retirement in 1996 as a Professor Emeritus of U.S.D.

Of many highlights during her career she founded the South Dakota Association for Middle Level Educators, worked on many School Accreditation teams throughout the Midwest states as well as working with St. Joseph’s Indian School and others on the Pine Ridge and Rosebud Indian lands.

Involved with numerous community groups in Elk Point and the Siouxland area Corinne was a recipient of the Women of Excellence Award in 2000. She was very involved in her philanthropic sorority, Epsilon Sigma Alpha, for more than 45 years, eventually elected International Council President traveling throughout the U.S. and abroad attending conventions and conclaves.

Corinne was preceded in death by her husband, Sidney, in 1994; her daughter, Deborah, in 2006; and her mother, Corinne “Granny, in 2010.

She is survived by her son, Sidney of Honolulu, Hawaii; and her grandson, Kyle Johnson of Portland, Oregon.
